KTS Jazz Spectacular @ Knights Templar School, Park Street, SG7 6DZ

The 2018 KTS Jazz Spectacular promises to be a fantastic evening of Jazz and Swing. Under the direction of Mrs Elinor Guinane, the KTS All Stars Big Band will present a programme of old favourites as well as some fantastic new charts. The evening will also feature the junior KTS Little Big Band, directed by Mrs Heather Johnson, as well as ‘The Gabriel Taylor Trio’, whose recent performances include playing at school functions and Hitchin’s Club 85. The KTS Parent’s Association will be running a bar selling wine, beer and soft drinks. Please note that tickets will not be available on the evening and must be bought in advance.

A year in the life of Arthur James Purfield (Battle of Loos talk) @ Baldock Arts & Heritage Centre, Old Town Hall, High Street SG7 6AR

September 1915 saw the start of one of the greatest battles of the First World War – the Battle of Loos.

Jim Purfield enlisted in Hitchin in September 1914 and returned to his native Kent to join his local battalion. He kept a daily diary for the next year, and from this, his Battalion records and official war records, we tell the story of his year which included the decimation of his battalion at Loos

In this illustrated talk we follow the personal record of this young man, who, along with thousands of others, was drawn into the hell of that war.

Venue open at 6:30pm, talk starts at 7pm

Join Jamie from Hedley Wright and your host Rob Scahill for an evening of wonderful wines. Ten wines will be available for tasting, with a small amount of cheese and biscuits to reset the palate between tastings. The bar will be open before the event. Feel free to bring your own cheese, biscuits and grapes too!

You are strongly advised to have eaten beforehand, and not to drive after this event.

An afternoon organised around the two books, Baldock Voices and Baldock Scrapbook, which were compiled from interviews with people in Baldock in the 1990s. A wealth of detail on Baldock going back almost a century, with readings and photographs.

Fine Gin Tasting @ Baldock Arts and Heritage Centre, Old Town Hall, High Street SG7 6AR

Perfect for any gin-lover, and those who would like to discover the pleasure. This year the tasting will be run by enthusiasts from the Festival Committee. You will be invited to sample up to six unusual, fine gins starting by sampling their aromas to detect the botanicals used and moving through the subtleties they contribute to the final taste and what you should garnish your drink with for maximum enjoyment. A firm favourite from last year’s Festival come and join this gin extravaganza. There are only 80 tickets available so come to buy early!

Baldock’s missing centuries: from 550 to 1146AD @ Baldock Arts & Heritage Centre, Old Town Hall, High Street SG7 6AR

North Hertfordshire’s archaeologist, Keith Fitzpatrick-Matthews, will be looking at what happened to the site of the old town following its abandonment by the Romans, trying to work out where everyone went and why it’s not apparently recorded in Domesday Book. He will look at archaeological evidence, place names and what few documents survive from the period.

Baldock Horticultural Society are pleased to be hosting a gardening talk by Anne Swithenbank who is a trained horticulturist, freelance gardening broadcaster and writer. She trained at Royal Botanical Gardens Kew and was Glasshouse supervisor at RHS Wisley.

Time: Doors open 7.00 for 7.30pm start
